COB LED Strip
Dotless Continuous Filament Glow — 480 Chips Per Metre, Zero Hotspots, Silky Uniform Light
What Is COB LED Strip?
COB LED strip (Chip on Board strip) is a revolutionary advancement over traditional SMD tape light. Instead of individual LED chips spaced apart, COB strips pack 480 chips per metre under a single continuous phosphor layer — creating what looks and behaves like a glowing filament rather than a string of dots.
COB Strip vs. SMD Strip — What You Actually See
The visual difference is striking. This comparison shows exactly what each strip looks like inside a profile or cove.
🟡 COB LED Strip — What You See
↑ Continuous filament glow — no dots visible
- 480 chips/metre under single phosphor layer
- Zero visible dots at any distance or angle
- Seamless glow even without a diffuser cover
- No bright spots or dark zones along the run
- Filament-like appearance — premium, refined look
- CRI >90 (Premium >95 Ra)
⬜ Standard SMD Strip — What You See
↑ Visible individual dots with gaps between
- 60–240 chips/metre, individually visible
- Dotted appearance visible on lit surfaces
- Requires diffuser to reduce (not eliminate) dots
- Uneven brightness between chip and gap zones
- Acceptable for hidden coves; poor for open view
- Typical CRI 80 Ra standard
The 480 Chips/Metre Difference
Chip density is the single biggest factor determining whether an LED strip looks premium or cheap. Here's how COB compares.
Visible dots even through diffuser
Dots reduced but still visible up close
Completely seamless — zero dots visible
Why Choose Nucleo COB LED Strip?
The choice of architects and interior designers who won't settle for visible dots in their cove and shelf lighting.
Truly Dotless Output
480 chips/metre under a single phosphor layer means zero visible individual LEDs from any angle or distance — a genuine seamless light line.
CRI >95 Ra
Premium models achieve CRI >95 Ra with strong R9 red rendering — accurate, flattering light for wardrobes, vanities, and display shelving.
Slim 8mm–10mm Width
Fits inside standard 10mm LED aluminium profiles. Works with recessed, surface, and corner profiles for fully architectural installations.
Cuttable Every 25mm
Precise cut-points every 25mm allow near-exact length fitting in any space — kitchen shelves, TV units, staircase risers, and wardrobe rails.
Uniform Brightness
SDCM <3 bin matching ensures consistent colour temperature across your entire installation — no warm/cool variation strip to strip.
50,000 Hour Life
High-density chips operate at lower per-chip current, reducing heat and extending rated life. No lumen depreciation over the first 10 years at normal use.
Technical Features
Built for professional installers and demanding residential specifications.
🔌 12V & 24V Available
24V recommended for runs over 5m — lower voltage drop over long runs maintains consistent brightness end-to-end.
🎚️ PWM Dimmable
Smooth flicker-free dimming with any PWM or CV dimmable driver. Maintains seamless appearance at all dim levels.
🌊 IP65 / IP67 Options
Silicone-coated IP65 and fully encapsulated IP67 versions available for bathroom, kitchen, and outdoor-protected use.
✂️ 25mm Cut Pitch
More frequent cut points than standard SMD strips — tighter fitting in short spaces without visible inactive strip tails.
🌡️ CCT Range
Available in 2700K, 3000K, 4000K, and 6000K. All variants use tightly binned chips for <3 SDCM consistency.
📏 Flexible Base
FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) base bends around curves and corners. Works in curved profile channels for organic architectural lines.

Where to Use COB LED Strip
Every space where seamless, architectural-quality linear light makes the difference between good and spectacular.
Ceiling Cove Lighting
Seamless wash of light across ceiling planes — no dot shadows on the ceiling surface even with open-face profiles.
Shelf & Cabinet Edge
Under-shelf and inside-cabinet lighting where the strip is visible at close range — only COB looks truly premium here.
Mirror & Vanity
Frame mirrors with consistent, flattering light. High-CRI COB eliminates the colour-distorting effect of lower-CRI strips on skin tones.
Staircase Risers
Continuous light on each step riser — viewed directly at eye level, only COB delivers a clean, professional appearance.
Bedhead Panels
Warm-white COB strip embedded in bedhead profiles for a luxury hotel ambiance in residential master bedrooms.
Retail Display Shelves
High-CRI COB under glass shelves in jewellery, watch, and optical retail — products look extraordinary under true-colour light.
Hospitality Interiors
Hotel corridors, suite headboards, bar back-panels, and spa treatment rooms — COB strip sets the premium standard.
Picture & Art Frames
Line the inside of deep picture frames or artwork niches — seamless COB eliminates dot-shadows on the artwork surface.
Installation Guide
Two standard methods for COB LED strip — direct adhesive mount and inside aluminium profile.
🔆 Direct Mount (Open-Face Cove)
- Clean the mounting surface (inside cove, shelf underside, or channel) thoroughly. The 3M adhesive backing requires a dust-free surface to bond correctly — wipe with isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry.
- Measure the total run length. Plan cut points at 25mm intervals — mark with a pencil before cutting. Never cut through a chip zone, only at the marked cut lines between chip groups.
- Peel the adhesive backing and press the strip firmly along the channel. For long runs, use additional clips or staples every 300mm to prevent sag over time.
- Connect the positive (+) and negative (–) wires to the CV driver output. For runs over 4m (12V) or 8m (24V), feed from both ends (dual-end feed) or mid-point to maintain brightness consistency.
- Power on and verify uniform brightness end-to-end. Use a smartphone camera to check for flicker (slow-motion mode). Adjust driver output voltage if dimmer end is noticeably less bright than feed end.
- Seal connections with heat-shrink tubing or waterproof push-in connectors. For IP65/IP67 strip, ensure all junction points maintain the rated IP protection.
📐 Inside Aluminium LED Profile
- Select an aluminium LED profile with an internal channel width of at least 10mm for 10mm COB strip, or 8mm for 8mm strip. Surface, recessed, corner, and suspended profile types all work with COB strip.
- Cut the aluminium profile to length using a mitre saw or aluminium-rated hacksaw. Deburr all cut ends with a file to prevent sharp edges cutting into the strip's FPC base.
- Slide or press the COB strip into the profile channel. The strip sits flat against the aluminium base — this direct contact is important as the aluminium acts as a heatsink, extending the strip's lifespan.
- Feed the connection wires out through the end cap openings. Fit the diffuser cover — choose opal (milky) for maximum dot concealment or clear/frosted to preserve maximum lumen output.
- Mount the loaded profile to the ceiling, wall, or furniture surface using the mounting clips or screws provided. Ensure profiles are perfectly level — any deviation is visible in the light output line.
- Connect to the CV driver, power on, and perform final visual inspection. COB strip inside a milky diffuser profile produces one of the most refined linear lighting results achievable in architecture.
✨ When the Light Itself Becomes the Detail
Great interior lighting doesn't call attention to itself — it makes everything around it look better. The problem with traditional LED strips is that they were never invisible enough. Dots, hotspots, and uneven brightness pulled attention away from the architecture they were meant to enhance.
Nucleo COB LED strip changes this. With 480 chips per metre producing a single unified emission surface, the light becomes a pure line — refined, consistent, and completely seamless. It's the difference between a strip that illuminates a shelf and one that transforms it into something architectural. Interior designers specify COB not for a technical reason but for a visual one: it simply looks better than anything else.
